Advancing Medical Education in Sylhet

For a long time, the people of greater Sylhet have realised the need for professional education and better healthcare services for community development. During the British period, community leaders were striving hard to establish a medical college in Sylhet with the aim of developing the existing healthcare system.

Accordingly, the government of Assam agreed to establish a Medical College in Sylhet, and construction work on the college and the hostel building started here in 1934. However, due to the influence of some malevolent high-ranking officials, the project was shifted to Guwahati. Subsequently, under pressure, the Assam government announced in an official gazette that a medical school would be established in Sylhet instead of a college. After some time, the proposed building was converted into a hospital in 1936, which was later upgraded to cater to British and Allied troops on the Burma front during the Second World War. In 1948, the hospital was further upgraded and converted into a Medical School with appropriate teaching staff and residential accommodation to produce Licentiate Medical Faculty doctors (LMF).

Later, in 1962, the Pakistan government, under pressure, decided to start a five-year graduate course of study leading to the award of the MBBS degree. However, the seat capacity was inadequate in relation to the population.

North East Medical College Hospital: Community Health and Affordable Care

Thereafter, realizing the need to establish a private medical college to meet the increasing demand of meritorious students and fulfil the country's demand for specialized doctors, Northeast Medical Pvt. Ltd. founded North East Medical College in 1998. The foundation stone of North East Medical College was laid by the honorable Health and Family Welfare Minister Jonab Sala Uddin Yousuf on December 12, 1999

An additional six acres of land has been acquired in South Surma near the Sylhet–Dhaka highway, and the construction of college and hospital buildings, including the administrative block, has been completed. This was inaugurated by the Honorable Finance and Planning Minister Jonab Alhaj M. Saifur Rahman, M.P. on May 24, 2002. Subsequently, the institute was upgraded to an 800-bed hospital with a multi-storied college building. The college and hospital are managed by a staff of excellent professional personnel whose expertise and experience have enriched the teaching, research, and healthcare system. It is currently the best medical college in Sylhet and one of the best private medical colleges in Bangladesh in terms of its faculty, facilities, high-quality education, and specialties. It is recognized as one of the Top Ten Medical Colleges in Bangladesh and one of the top five private medical colleges in Bangladesh considering its quality education.
